The best part about winter in Boise means that the snow isn’t something that’s going to hold you back. Whether you want to get away for a weekend of skiing, or just have an experience in town there is a little something for everyone. Surrounded by multiple ski resorts, Boise is the hub for fun and annual winter events.
When you’re thinking about doing your holiday shopping or even just want to have a shopping day out, the Village is the perfect destination. With tons of shops and restaurants, you can’t go wrong with planning a day trip to the Village in Meridian. Come Wintertime, the Village is decorated with the best Christmas lights and also hosts a pop-up ice rink for skating!
This annual event is hosted at the Idaho Botanical Gardens for over a month. The gardens are decorated and displayed with over 400,000 lights. And if you plan it right, you might even catch Santa Clause making an appearance.
Throughout the early months of Winter, Boise Farmers Market puts on an indoor market where you can still get all of the local favorites that you find at the summer market. According to the season, of course, you can get fresh produce and products from all your favorite vendors.
Around Christmas time, it’s a mission to find Santa and get those holiday pictures with the kiddos or the whole family. Businesses in the area host events and release their schedules of when and where Santa will be.
Something to do for a date night or an evening out with the family. Get pulled around Downtown Boise by a horse-drawn carriage for a memorable evening during Christmas time. The rides are completely free and are first come, first served. Head to Washington Trust Bank in downtown Boise at the corner of 9th and Bannock to secure your seat. Rides will be available on be December 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, 16th, and 17th from 4 - 8 pm.
For those extra cold Wintery nights, The Egyptian Theater might be the best option for something to do. You can catch some of the most classic movies of all time. Just check their website for a schedule of movies and times. (https://egyptiantheatre.net/)
Snowshoeing the Star Riverwalk - Running along the Boise River in Star, Idaho, the Star Riverwalk is 1.4 miles point to point and is the perfect route for beginning to moderate snowshoers or really anyone that wants to get outside for a leisure adventure.
About 3 hours away, you can plan the perfect weekend getaway in Sun Valley. The original 1936 Sun Valley Lodge remains and has since been remodeled for modern travelers. The town is also known for its amazing skiing, and Sun Valley Resort was even named by Forbes Magazine as one of the World’s best Ski Resorts.
Whether you’re seeking out a commercial or more outdoor experience, around Boise, there are plenty of options for hot springs. One of our favorites is Trail Creek Hot Springs, and all you have to do is Google map it.
Ski, snowboard, hike, snowshoe, mountain coaster, tubing hill, you name it, and Bogus Basin has it. The closest ski resort to town is equipped with all of the activities to make Winter in Boise that much better!
Located about 2 hours North of Boise, you will find the little town of McCall. Every year, the town puts on a week-long carnival that brings out the best in all of the businesses, people, and the entire community. The ice sculpture contest is something you don’t want to miss. Head up to McCall from January 27th - February 5th to participate in the festivities.
One of the more scenic and rather magical winter activities that everyone should experience is Hap and Florence Points Sleigh Rides, located about 2 hours from Boise in Donelly, Idaho.
