Here's How to Prepare for Another Epic Snow Season At Bogus Basin

Last updated September 23, 2021 by Totally Boise

As the saying goes, "Winter is coming" and for Idahoans, winter sports are one of our favorite activities. Local hotspot Bogus Basin Mountain Recreation Area has 2,600 acres of day skiing, 175 acres of night skiing, and 37,000 Nordic trails at your disposal. While it's only fall, winter will be here before you know it, and at Bogus Basin, they are already prepping for another tubular season on the second largest mountain in Idaho.

Bogus Basin Gets You on The Mountain Faster

Established as a non-profit over 77 years ago, the recreational hub known as Bogus Basin is located only 16.5 miles outside of North Boise. Making winter sports more accessible to over 700,000 residents, the Treasure Valley is spoiled to have a mountain so close to town. One of the coolest facts Totally Boise recently learned about Bogus Basin is that on top of the 200-250 inches of natural snow they get, Bogus Basin has the second-largest snowmaking system that allows them to generate its own snow. By producing more snow, you get the most use out of your ski pass and your skis and snowboards. The more powder days, the better!

As mentioned earlier, Bogus Basin is 100% a non-profit, meaning all proceeds from season passes, rentals and donations go to helping the mountain and local winter sports recreationists in several ways.

How to Prepare for Winter at Bogus Basin

New to winter sports or know you're going to be spending a lot of time on the slopes this season and want to improve your technique? Bogus Basin offers ski school lessons and season passes that you don't want to miss out on! They offer both private and semi-private lessons. The top of the mountain also has a pro shop for all your snow gear needs, rentals, and even keeping your gear in tip-top shape.

Why Tune and Wax?

Just like your bicycle, every season, it's wise to tune and wax your snowboard and skis. Sharpening your skis and waxing your snowboard not only increases the longevity of your board but allows you to perform your best on the slopes and is key for control and safety.

When is it time to get Ski and Snowboard tuning and waxing?

  • Wax every 3-4 rides
  • Sharpen at the start of every season!

Depending on how often you use your skis or snowboard will depend on how often you should be tuning it. If you are unsure, just stop by the shop at Bogus Basin to ask one of their friendly employees.

While it can be hard to find outdoor activities during winter — skiing, snowboarding, tubing, and snowshoeing is an easy solution to getting out of the house and staying active. While we wait patiently for snow, grab your season pass and get your gear ready for another gnarly season at Bogus Basin!
