Last updated January 18, 2024 by Totally Boise

From the admirable dedication of Rocky Mountain High School's Kaylee Crawford to the community's engagement in winter activities at Camel's Back Park, each story offers a glimpse into the vibrancy of Boise. We'll also delve into important safety measures on our trails, the collaborative fight against breast cancer, and the progressive steps towards sustainable transportation. It's time to discover the many facets that make Boise a remarkable place.

Great Student: Rocky Mountain High School’s Kaylee Crawford Advocates for Her Peers

Kaylee Crawford, a senior at Rocky Mountain High School, is described in her scholarship application as someone who has an “innate passion to serve others.”

Crawford has been selected for BoiseDev’s Great Student Award — where they pick one student each week for a $200 scholarship based on their good deeds in the community — from helping others, volunteering, and more.

Crawford’s ability to help others is showcased in her decision to co-found Lime Club which encourages students struggling with their social lives by giving them a safe space to talk to other peers and have fun.

Lime Club teamed up with Rocky Mountain Student Council to launch Sources of Strength, a school program that helps students with their mental health.

Snow Days in Boise Last Week! Kids Hit Camel's Back Park to Sled Down the Hill

Last week, many kids flocked to Camel's Back Park to revel in the Boise School District Snow Day, turning the park into a hub of winter fun and excitement.

Thanks to the plentiful snowfall, the hill at Camel's Back Park transformed into an ideal sledding destination, arguably the best in the city. The slope provided the perfect setting for exhilarating sled rides, drawing families and kids of all ages. The park buzzed with laughter and joyful shouts, as children and their parents enjoyed the snowy landscape, building snowmen, engaging in friendly snowball fights, and making the most of this delightful winter day.

Ridge to Rivers Warns of Ongoing Winter Conditions on Trails, Urges Caution

Ridge to Rivers, the trail management crew in Boise, says winter trail conditions continue, and all trails are snow-covered as of Friday, January 12.

Trails in the lower Foothills receive more use, so they will have a higher chance of causing a slip. Ridge to Rivers recommends traction on your shoes or studded/fat tires on those trails.

As you ascend higher into the Foothills, you will find deeper snow and fewer tracks. There will be less need for traction but possibly more need for snowshoes or even XC skis.

With more snow on the way and cold temperatures ahead, these conditions should last into next week.

Pink In The Rink: Idaho Steelheads and St. Luke's Team Up to Battle Breast Cancer

For the 17th consecutive year, the Idaho Steelheads are teaming up with St. Luke's in a collaborative effort to fundraise for breast cancer research, treatment, and support for survivors.

The unique Pink In The Rink jerseys, created by designer Karl Winks, are a highlight of this initiative. These jerseys are available for bidding through an online auction, the link to which can be found here. The proceeds from this auction will be directed to St. Luke’s Breast Care Services. These services encompass a range of crucial offerings, including screening and diagnostic mammography, genetic counseling at their High-Risk Breast Clinic, comprehensive treatment for breast cancer, and dedicated support for survivors.

Idaho to Receive $6.2 Million in Grants to Continue Building Out Electric Vehicle Charging Network

The Biden-Harris Administration on Thursday announced $6.2 million in grant funding to the cities of Boise and Idaho Falls to install an estimated 112 electric vehicle chargers statewide with an emphasis on supporting disadvantaged and rural communities, with Boise receiving half of the grant funding.

The City of Boise will receive $3.2 million to implement public electric vehicle charging sites, installing an estimated 100 Level-2 charging ports across at least 20 sites and at least 4 DC fast chargers across 2 to 4 sites. The project focuses on underserved communities, increases community outreach, and creates an EV workforce development program.
