How to make DIY Hand Sanitizer

Last updated March 19, 2020 by Totally Boise

Hand sanitizer is a hot commodity right now, stores are hardly able to keep up with the high demand during this scary pandemic. We know how irritating it can be going to multiple different stores and not finding the essentials you need to prevent the spread of infectious diseases like COVID-19. Lucky for you we have just the thing to make sure you are prepared for whatever comes our way during this unknown time in our community.

Making your own hand sanitizer can be a good way to keep you and your family busy while also taking care of your health and safety at home. DIY hand sanitizer is a great craft to get the kids involved and bring your family together to help decrease the spread of germs, keeping everyone safe in the Treasure Valley .

All you need is three simple ingredients to make the perfect disinfectant hand sanitizer.

What you need:
  1. 99% Isopropyl, or Rubbing Alcohol
  2. Aloe Vera Gel
  3. Essential Oil (lavender, tea tree) or just plain old lemon juice
How to do it:

Step 1: Put ¾ isopropyl or rubbing alcohol

Step 2: ¼ cup aloe vera gel (to keep your hands smooth)

Step 3: 8-10 drops of essential oil or lemon juice to make it smell better (other options of this is peppermint, clove, eucalyptus)

The directions are simple, add all these ingredients into a bowl, mix with a spoon and then beat with a whisk until it is more of a gel consistency. Lastly pour your hand sanitizer into an empty bottle such as a travel bottle, or empty hand sanitizer bottle for easy use for everyone around the house.

Hint: Put it in a travel size lotion or shampoo bottle for your purses or cars to always have one readily available!

A few things to keep in mind when making your own hand sanitizer:
  • Make sure your station is whipped down and clean
  • Wash your hands prior to beginning
  • Ensure the utensils being used are clean and germ-free
  • Wear gloves to keep your hands clean and harm-free from the rubbing alcohol

Having hand sanitizer accessible through the house will reduce germs and prevent spreading them. It’s always important to practice good personal health such as washing your hands with soap and water, covering your coughs, avoid touching your face, and staying home when you’re not feeling well. Using these precautions will prevent you and others around you from germs. If everyone does their part, we will continue sticking together as a community and fighting this together, one day at a time.
