We all know we should wear sunscreen, but do we understand why it’s so important? Sun damage can lead to wrinkles, discoloration, and skin cancer. It’s no secret that Totally Boise loves Treasure Valley Dermatology, and for a good reason. Dr. Dustin Portela (known on social media as 208SkinDoc) recommends two specific treatments and three products to help patients achieve clearer, healthier skin.
CO2 Laser
The CO2 laser is ideal for patients who want to resurface their face due to aging and sun damage. It utilizes a fraction-ended laser to create a grid-like pattern of holes in the patient's skin. This stimulates new growth and leaves areas of unaffected skin, allowing the body to heal more quickly than with traditional lasers.
Benefits of A CO2 Laser Treatment:
- Tightens the skin
- Eliminates fine lines and deep wrinkles
- Only one treatment needed
“This treatment is great for people who are working from home,” said Dr. Portela.
Dr. Portela shares that treatments like microneedling (which TVD also offers) are great for those who need to rebound quicker, but results will require multiple sessions. Pleased to have this corvette of a laser, Dr. Portela advises anyone looking to get laser treatment to do their research.
“It’s important to go to a qualified and trusted dermatologist because the skin can be burned if not done properly,” said Dr. Portela.
Fine lines and deep wrinkles aren’t the only skin issues people may face. One of the biggest hurdles many people struggle with over the years is acne –– but don’t worry, Dr. Portela also has a machine for that.
Intense Pulse Light (IPL) SCITON BroadBand Light (BBL) MACHINE
The IPL machine is not a true laser. Instead, it works by customizing the device to target problematic areas of the skin through different filters.
Benefits Of A BBL Treatment:
- Reverses sun damage
- Reduces brown spots, redness, rosacea, acne
- Minimum downtime
- Eliminates pre-cancerous cells
Since the BBL machine uses filters to target specific areas and issues on the skin, it offers a more broad range of treatments.
“It’s one of the best machines on the market, and we are lucky to have it,” said Dr. Portela.
Despite the redness that will occur from this treatment (similar to other facial treatments), you can resume normal activities with little downtime.
Living in a digitally-focused world, many people want to put their best face forward. To do so, Dr. Portela urges everyone to have a solid skincare routine.
Skincare Tips
Sunscreen, sunscreen, SUNSCREEN! Dr. Portela’s #1 tip is to wear sunscreen. It prevents future damage and health issues to the skin. He recommends using any sunscreen that works for you.
“As long as you wear an SPF 30 that says broad spectrum and you put it on every day, you’ll do great,” said Dr. Portela.
Adding a Vitamin C serum (10% minimum) and retinol at night is also highly recommended. Vitamin C nourishes the skin, while retinol can help fight pesky blemishes.
“We carry great products but we also carry a range of products that are at a level of affordability,” said Dr. Portela.
In 2020, Dr. Portela launched his 208SkinDoc skincare line for patients who were looking for quality skincare at an affordable price.

3 Tips For Choosing New Skincare Products:
- Price does not reflect the quality, but quality is key.
- You must love the product. Chances are, if you don’t love it, you won’t use it.
- Use reputable brands and do your research.
While dermatologists treat a long list of skin conditions and hold medical knowledge of the skin, they work very well with estheticians and encourage patients to seek more than one opinion. Dr. Portela’s most significant takeaways for patients are to do what’s best for their skin type and always wear sunscreen.
