5 Reasons Boise Loves Potatoes

1. Pie Hole’s Potato Bacon Pizza

If you’re a Boise local then I hope you have had the chance to eat at Pie Hole. Pie Hole has two locations in Boise, one downtown and the other conveniently located next to campus. Whether it is after a night of drinking downtown or after a Boise State football win, Pie Hole is the perfect way to end the night with some tasty pizza. One of their most famous slices is the Potato Bacon Pizza. I thought it sounded crazy when I heard about it my freshman year. My friend had to buy it for me just so I would eat it but after the first bite I understood. The cheese, bacon bits and potato slices combine seamlessly to make any mouth water.

2. Boise Fry Company

Boise Fry Company is one of the first places I ate at when I moved to Boise. Their menu allows you to customize how you like to have your burgers and fries. For fries you will have to choose the size, type of potato and the cut. My personal favorite has to be the russet homestyle fries or the sweet potato regular fries. But wait it gets better. Boise Fry Company has a handful of different sauces to choose from. The fry sauce and garlic aioli sauce are my go to sauces. They also provide their customers with local, natural and organic products.

3. Goldy’s Breakfast Bistro Hashbrowns

For the BEST hash browns in town go to Goldys. Goldy’s in known for their different hashbrown and breakfast potatoes options. I’m getting hungry just thinking of them! On weekends Goldy’s can get quite packed so I recommend leaving earlier than normal to beat the rush. The perk about long waits at Goldy’s is they have a conjoined coffee and pastry shop where you can grab a warm drink while you wait for your table. Goldy’s is located in the heart of downtown Boise and is a great place to take friends and family visiting for breakfast.

4. Idaho® Potato Commission Potatoes

Established in 1937, the Idaho Potato Commission (IPC) is a state agency that is responsible for promoting and protecting the famous "Grown in Idaho®" seal. This trademark assures consumers they are purchasing genuine, top-quality Idaho potatoes. The Idaho Potato industry provides about $4 billion to Idaho’s economy and provides more than 300,000 jobs! Idaho's ideal growing conditions, including rich, volcanic soil, climate and irrigation differentiate Idaho potatoes from potatoes grown in other states. There are 320,000 acres of Idaho potatoes harvested per year. That adds up to 13 BILLION pounds of potatoes!

Idaho® Potato Commission provides almost 1,500 great recipes online. There are many creative and interesting recipes I had no clue potatoes could even be incorporated in (eg. Idaho Potato Holiday Cookies). Some of my favorite holiday recipes can be found at the top of the page. The Loaded Baked Idaho Potato Skins stood out to me the most because it looked delicious.

Yes, that is a giant potato floating in the air. This will be the 5th annual “New Year’s Idaho® Potato Drop” at the Boise, Idaho Capitol building. The family friendly event provides the community with live music, food AND the USASA-sanctioned “Toyota Big-Air Rail Jam” sponsored by Inland Northwest Toyota Dealers.

Toyota Big Air Rail Jam is complete with the Gateway Tuber Luge (created by world-renown snow park designer and first-ever US snowboard champion Ryan Neptune). This unique setup utilizes high speed crank-pulleys down a sequentially lit runway, a big-air launch, transitions, rails, and a quarter pipe and is the first ever of it’s kind! The adjoined inner-tube (bobsled type) luge is also completely unique, open to the public and should draw plenty of participants and “Spec-Taters”!

McCall Winter Carnival Ice Sculpture pre-show and Idaho Wrestle Club will be battling for the “Potato Belt” championship in Capitol park! Enjoy several fun activities in the free and heated Mountain America Credit Union Family Tent.
